Sofa Measuring Guide

You’ve found it, the perfect sofa for your space. The next step is measuring your space. Not only will this ensure that it fits exactly where you envisioned, but also that it gets in! There’s nothing more disheartening than ordering a sofa you love to find out on delivery day that it’s too big for your space or, worse still, delivery teams can’t even get it into your home!

So, what goes into measuring your space fully and, how do you avoid mistakes?

STEP 1. CHOOSE YOUR SPACE

First things first, choose the room you want the new item to go in. Not only is this important as it will help you to determine a pathway for delivery teams. It also enables you to measure different spaces in your room, ensuring this piece will fit in, however, your space changes and evolves over time.

STEP 2. UNDERSTAND THE MEASUREMENTS

At Distinctive Chesterfields, we supply all measurement and sizing details for each of our models, online and in our brochures. Here’s how our measurements breakdown:

Height: This is measured from the feet up to the tops of the arms/back whichever is the highest point of the soda and inclusive of any cushions (not applicable to fixed seat bases).

Depth: This is measured from the front of the sofa (base and cushions) towards the final point at the back of the sofa.

Width: This is measured arm to arm (outer arm to outer arm) across the length of the sofa.

STEP 3. MEASURING YOUR HOME

When measuring your home for a new furniture delivery there are two elements to consider; the space itself and the pathway into that space and any other spaces which may house this piece one day.

Measuring the Space:

Measuring your space means taking into consideration the height, width, and depth and ensuring that the sofa you’ve chosen will fit in the space of your choice.

Measuring the Pathway:

When we say ‘the pathway’ we mean any route that our delivery teams will have to take to get your item(s) into place. So, when measuring this make sure you are measuring the height and width of doorways, entrance points, and any stairways. It’s also important that you measure any hallway clearance (the space between any interior hallways and entrances, ensuring that our teams can maneuver the furniture in and out of rooms) ceiling heights (as our teams may need to tip furniture lengthways to carry it) and the height between ceilings and any staircases (if the furniture is going upstairs).

If you live in an apartment building or a building with multiple floors it’s best to measure the inside (H,W,D) of any lifts or external staircases that will be used during delivery.

STEP 4. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR CHOICE

Once you’ve got the measurements you need to check these against the measurements stated in the product description and make sure that none of the entrance ways, lifts, or ceilings, etc are below the clearance for your chosen model.

If you feel like you need extra help or have questions about bespoke pieces, corner units, or any other measuring questions please get in touch. Our sales experts are available in-store and online 7 days a week to answer any questions or help in any way possible, so please don’t be shy.

Once you’ve finalized your measurements, you can get down to the exciting part; ordering your new sofa!
