DIY: Make Your Own Natural Room Fragrance

18th Februar 2014

It may still be winter here in the UK, but that doesn’t mean we can’t fill our homes with the beautifully fresh scents of spring and summer. Thankfully, Andrea Butje of US-based aromatherapy school Aromahead Institute has agreed to share with us a fun how-to guide to help you make your very own scented room spray.

Spending the first decade of her career working in a private practice as a massage therapist, Andrea later got into aromatherapy – making stunning blends with relaxing, medicinal and cosmetic qualities – before writing a book comprising her favourite recipes.

Andrea completed the Aromatherapy Certification Program in 1998, which established the beginning of Aromahead Institute. Today, she travels the globe with independent essential oil distillers and regularly serves as a guest lecturer at aromatherapy conferences.

Today, she’s sharing with us a lemon and orange blossom natural room spray, which we hope you’ll love – just be sure not to spray any of this product near your Chesterfield! Read on…

One of the best ways to freshen up your home and your outlook is with an aromatherapy room spray with essential oils.

Essential oils smell amazing and are produced by plants. They do their work without added chemical synthetics. The right essential oils can even boost your immunity and disinfect your air while they deodorize. This is especially helpful in the winter—when viruses remain airborne.

So without further ado, here’s one of my favorite room spray recipes to teach students at Aromahead Institute.

You’ll need:

• 2 oz water

• 15 drops Orange essential oil

• 5 drops Peppermint essential oil

• 10 drops Lemon essential oil

I like to make this blend in a 2 oz. colored glass bottle. The colored glass blocks the light (light can reduce the shelf lives of essential oils) and glass doesn’t release chemicals into the highly concentrated essential oils the way plastic might. Amber or cobalt bottles work well, and you can get them with a screw-on spray top if you order online.

Just put the water in the bottle, then add your essential oils drop by drop. It’s okay if you accidentally get a few more drops in than you intended! Screw the lid on tightly, then shake, and spray away! This also works as a linen spray.

May your home be fresh, your outlook be optimistic, and your health be vibrant!

Thank you to Andrea of Aromahead for sharing this lovely tutorial with us. Don’t forget to check out Andrea’s website, and head to Facebook to ‘Like’ her page too.
